Pet Stuff Resale was lucky enough to be included in a Huffpost blog today featuring 8 unusual thrift stores.

After several inquiries from the blog, it made sense to give a short recap about this one of a kind pet business.

A corporate downsizing combined with a volunteer background in dog rescue
put me working at a Petco in Houston, Texas in 1997. It was there that the idea to recycle pet supplies was born and encouraged by other rescuers, vets and groomers.

Dogs items are still the number one category, with cat things second. Pet Stuff Resale also stocks things for reptiles, fish and small mammals as well.

It serves Houston only with no shipping.

Education is a big part of the service, from vet referrals to new puppy suggestions to parrot sitters. There is much I still don't know about animals, but probably know someone who does know about any given topic.

Look what was in the Pet Stuff Resale warehouse!

End of the year means doing inventory in preparation for taxes and EVERY year there are surprises.."oh yea, that's where that was" kind of revelations:)

This ottoman instantly meowed at me in the store..looks like a cattoman to me. Cats would love to perch on it AND tear around under the skirt underneath as well.

A nice touch that the legs are covered and the skirt is lined.

This very well made custom "cattoman" is 21.00 SOLD

This 10-15 gallon aquarium stand has been nicely repainted with a semi gloss paint; coupled with a 10 gal tank and lights(too cold for photographer to assemble) it is for sale for 42.00.

It can however be repurposed for several other things. The back can be enclosed or not and provide storage...maybe gardening things or in a spare room. I can see a large beach scene painting perched on it.

A sunken planter would do well or 2-3 pots on top; it is fairly strong.26.00 by itself

This is baby Elfin, a 4 month old chihuahua weighing only 2.1 lb, with horrendously luxating patellas.He was released by the SPCA(Thank you!) to Chestnut Rehab, a nonprofit in Bellaire, Tx. to get more orthopedic help than a shelter can provide.

He needs a miracle of a TV story or the like due to the expense of this complicated surgery. In an unusual move, 3 of my bud vets from 2 clinics are teaming up for the surgery. Save Christmas $$ 2 ways at Pet Stuff Resale

The prices are good at PSR anyway, so the first way to save is easy.

Often items at PSR are new or look new so would make great gifts. (I am not recommending to hide that a gift is recycled.) That saves you money on your shopping list. Here's a perfect example.

This portable drinking bowl looks new and is 8.99 on Waterrover.com. It is hands free, leak free and excess water goes back into bottle.

A great stocking stuffer at Pet Stuff Resale for 5.00.

This finch cage is sold at pet places as a parakeet cage, but it is too small even for one keet. For an animal used to flying, to live their whole life(or even most) in a cage this small is just flat wrong.

This is part of how Pet Stuff Resale recycles. The tray was missing from the silver cage when I bought it, so I added a tray and wire base from another cage that was too rusted for me to sell.That went to metal recycling and this cage is repurposed. Paper covers most of the bottom anyway. I don't recommend pets for Christmas, but this could be an upgrade for a current cage. It can also be used for a hospital or transport cage. 16.00 at PSR

Actually there is a 3rd way to save money!Purchasing something used as basic and practical as the reptile tank pictured at the bottom right corner frees up spending for other pet items you may want new.

Savannah Carolina was MOST uninterested in modeling this shell pink sweater. She weighs about 9 1/2 lbs, it actually fit Lizbet the 13 lb dachshund better. Lizbet also enjoys wearing them:) This was custom made and only 4.00.

Both Savannah Carolina and Lizbet are still looking for their permanent homes.

Dog faces and a horse in the crowd

The concept of posting "dog faces in the crowd" did not start out as a regular feature of the blog showcasing items for sale thru Pet Stuff Resale:)
It was a one time thing from me visiting vet clinics on a regular basis and seeing some great "FACES", but has become popular so it continues...

This is Candy, supervising her owners cleaning up the edge of their property in Hockley. What a shame they have to clean up after people throwing trash out of their vehicles. Many people have golf carts out here, Candy says this one is hers, she lets them borrow it from time to time.

This blog is purposely upbeat and does not get into the negative parts of rescue that I experience.

This picture was taken to celebrate Abby's life, not to dwell on her death over the weekend: she was 29 years old! I say that deserves mention and celebration! She was not a rescue, was owned by my realtor and now great bud Razelle(my host when escaping the Magnolia fires) for all those years. She enjoyed being ridden until earlier this year, wow! They probably stopped riding before she wanted them to, especially as she had buddy horses to take with her. Thanks Raz, for being such a good owner.

Seen at Jester Plaza vet clinic recently were Munch and Lucy!

Peanut is a tiny male chihuahua being fostered
thru Citizens for Animal Protection. When he came
into the shelter he weighed only 3.2 lbs! He is now a little over
4 lbs. and is altered, so ready for adoption.

He has 2 luxating patellas and still has his baby teeth. He just had a dental and the vet saw no reason to remove

the teeth..Peanut is about a year old and will need a very special home.
He is a little shy, but not sad..this picture was taken less than 24 hours after his surgery..

Sugar Bear and her buddy ______Bear, were walking thru a parking lot when they stopped briefly to have their picture taken. Actually the buddy was not interested in even slowing down, much less stopping for long! Sugar Bear is part lab and part Shar Pei.

I stand in line for 2 hours(as a veteran, I really bring a chair and a book) to get into this annual garage sale and it is worth it. Today I had to stand guard over the stuff as people who came in behind me were trying to get it as well:)

With cold weather approaching, childrens sleeping bags make great, inexpensive dog beds.

Both big dogs and little dogs love them. Min Pins and chihuahuas will burrow in them in July!
Boogie the Yorkie/escape artist is looking for a very patient home with a buddy dog. He says male dogs like pink also.

It is difficult to find very W I D E gates. This one is neat because the two connectors are flexible, so it doesn't have to be a straight line barrier. This flexibility allows this to be used in multiple ways and in non traditional sized openings. It is a discontinued gate from the Cardinal Gate company, but you can peruse the website to see how expensive metal gates are new. This one looks new and it only 70.00. It extends up ot 10 feet. It is 28" tall.

This HUGE PetMate portable pet home is great for big dogs or several smaller ones, as long as they don't chew. Most softsided or mesh crates are unsellable due to chew holes, but this one has been repaired almost professionally.

As always, Pet Stuff Resale does not cover up or minimalize used conditions, this is marked down because of it. It is 41x29x32. It also comes with a cover and tie down stakes for camping. (I would not recommend using anything soft like this when camping.) I think it is great for traveling for over night sleeping and even some post surgery cases.

The other dog item is a white metal crib on rollers that would be great for either foster puppies or post surgery dogs that need to stay quiet. Geriatric dogs that are too fragile for mingling with more active dogs but still want to be part of the gang would also do well in this crib. (Picture at the end of the blog shows the bed folded up w/o the mattress and base.) It is 24"x39" and the bar spacing is 2", so little heads cannot get stuck in them.(Kitten heads could get thru them).

This is one of the neatest things to ever come into Pet Stuff Resale; the rolling makes it easy to move around, it's easy to keep clean, it's multi purpose. Wait, it also folds up! The bottom removes and it can be used with or without the mattress. Little paws cannot climb the smooth metal.

Houston Dog faces and 1 more

Gizzie on the left and Georgia below were minding their own business at Tanglewilde Vet Clinic when they were bombarded with pictures. This owner was so accommodating-the girls REALLY just wanted to get out of Dodge and defeated our repeated attempts to photograph them together.
One of them turns 11 this week!

Mikey and Missy were both adopted by my wonderful bud Gretajean, both had heartworms(will people never understand the importance of prevention?) and both have this binkie addiction:)

These are their Halloween witch binkies. Mickey gets whichever one he can yank from under the computer table when Missy is otherwise engaged.

Bailey was incredibly patient for her nail trim. Richard her owner came by for a nail trim,which I do for 5.00-Greater Good sends lots of clients to me, thanks!. Then he asked to be shown how to do it. Kim my bud was visiting, so was quickly conned into helping:)

Chloe was patiently waiting her turn at Westbury Vet Clinic last month when the roving Pet Stuff Resale camera caught her. She looks about 4, she is really 13. She has a wonderful owner who did major research into vets after moving to Houston from New York. I very much enjoyed visiting with her and think she made a good decision in vets!

I really feel sorry for folks with real jobs that can't rove around as I do, so the dog faces are to add a little joy to your day. It is not by accident that most of them are "seasoned" faces, those are my favorite.

Oh, yea, this blog is supposed to also highlight items from Pet Stuff Resale for sale.......
Rocco was turned in to a shelter when his owners could not afford treatment for his broken leg. All healed, he now needs a permenant home, all 4 lbs of him. He desperately hopes the Halloween costume finds a different home! It says Devilish Dog on the back which is 180 dogrees from his personality. He is one of the sweet, even quiet, chihuahuas, gets along with other dogs and even cats.

I will have items for sale(and a foster dog) at the Kingsland Blvd 30th anniversary Open House this Saturday 2-5 pm. 281-578-1506 is their number. Of course there will be a pet costume contest. I have a booth in Exam room 9. My cell is 817-480-8400 if you want to see what I am bringing.

Bunkbeds for dogs???? and 1 more

One of the fun things about my job is scouting for pet items and a non pet item jumps out at me and sez " I could be a pet________!" Cashiers at one of my regular haunts ask "What dog thing is this going to be this time?"

This bunk bed is a great addition to a multi dog or dog/cat home. I have found that dogs nest more together when elevated, which means they take up less floor space! Here they can nap on the lower bunk or underneath and food, toy and blankie storage goes on top bunk. This makes for a very organized pet area. 150.00 at Pet Stuff Resale(google to see bunkbed prices, wow!)-some delivery available

I have also used a bunk bed frame only for cats and they LOVE to climb as well as scratch, keeping them off my wooden bed headboard.

The correct terminology is "repurposing". I just call it fun! It also adds to part of my mission to recycle whatever can be given another use.

This dog/cat hidey(very small dogs/cats) was picked up by my pet stuff shopper Nancy. I am not sure I would have picked up on its possibilities.

Can you be open minded about pit bulls?

This is Bahrain, 4 months old, already neutered.

Branching out from showcasing items from Pet Stuff Resale, in this post 2 foster dogs are being profiled. Citizens for Animal Protection is one of the few shelters that evaluates pit type breeds instead of automatically euthanizing or turning them away. Potential adopters are screened specifically about their interest in the breeds.
These two unrelated pups have mild upper respiratory infections and needed about 10 days in isolation.

The economy and fires have reduced adoption options so drastically that it will be even tougher than usual to place them. These two are protected by having a foster, but still need wide exposure to find them good homes. Please share this so I can take the next 2 dogs that need me.

He has NOT had an ear enhancement procedure!

Trying to showcase Bahrains freckles was tough; there are so many neat
smells in the woods to distract the dogs. I am not even guessing as to each ones primary breed.

Colonel is a 5 month old pit mix, also neutered. He is about 40 lbs and a little more macho right now than Bahrain, who is a 35 lb wuus.

Yea, they are both crate trained!

They both can sit on command and they have heard of "stay", but are convinced I can't possibly mean it. Many, many photos were taken to get just 2-3 with as little motion"blur" as possible.

The unusual thing about the rescue is that I wasn't even aware of it until much later!

After I evacuated for the 4th time, my neighbor called and asked if someone could borrow one of the dog crates in the front yard. (I confess, I had not unloaded completely, all of the things I sell on weekends should have already been back in the garage. It was Labor Day and I was lazy...) I immediately said anyone could have anything to help move their pets out.

A week after we returned some neighbors stopped by and wanted to buy the crate they had taken. They told me the crate meant they could save one more monkey; I was stunned as I had forgotten about the crate and had just assumed whoever it had been was fleeing with a dog! They were able to get 6 out and before leaving released the 2 for which they had no room. Note: these are legally kept monkeys and have a neat habitat we can see from the road, but the monkeys did not want their pictures taken for this post.
It was very nice to have helped, even though totally by accident.

One of the things I should have done was have the dogs rabies certificates, but more importantly, have a picture of each one. I did not expect to get separated from them and wasn't but at noon on Labor Day I was in Brenham
with no clue that I would be evacuating by 6 pm.

There are still over 30 animals at Baker Vet Clinic in Waller that have not been reclaimed. If you have room, please consider one of them. They will not be able to keep them indefinitely.

Pet supplies I can personally recommend for fleeing a fire.

Evacuating with pets from any disaster is tough at best; I am extremely grateful to all of the law enforcement folks that made it orderly. It was also a major help that I had so many pet supplies on hand.

I would have had crates for the dogs if I didn't already own Pet Stuff Resale, but probably would not have invested in this puppy pen before the Magnolia fire. It was such a major help it gave me the idea to share;the stress reduction was incredible. There was no worry about a scared dog backing out of a collar or otherwise getting loose or jumping out of the pen. It was used for feeding and potty both since it could be moved around. 75.00 at Pet Stuff Resale
(It is not recommended to feed dogs together, especially when they are stressed, no matter how friendly they are. There was a time issue at that point, I stood right there and grabbed a dog as soon as the picture was taken)

The crate below is great for small dogs and cats, being able to lift them out thru the top is a big advantage. It is amazing how such small legs can brace against the traditional door. Vet clinics really like these for cats. Note, sometimes, the wire top pulls loose at the latches, I recommend anchoring with ties to prevent an escape. 17.00

Leo is a very shy dog on the best of days so NOT interested in modeling this next crate, a Kennel Cabin. He weighs 4 lbs; any bigger and this crate would not be appropriate. The crate on the right, also a Kennel Cabin, has a wire top with a small opening. I evacuated a Quaker parrot and a cockatiel together in it. It is also great for most other small mammals and reptiles. 12.00 each

The wee wee pads were a God send, a bud had just given them to me 2 days before; I did not realize their value in an evacuation until I was grabbing stuff in haste. They were great not only for crates but also on the truck seat for car seats when the dogs were not crated. Honey B said not to tell...just a little car sickness on the first day.

Evacuation was mandatory Monday, then Tuesday, then Wednesday. By then the dogs were thinking this was a new routine. I began this blog on Thursday and in the middle of typing and loading pictures, we all had to bolt immediately.We got NO notice due to the rapidity of fires renewing and I was not allowed back in until Sunday.

The only reason I still have a house is that a neighbor defied the mandatory evacuation, so was there when a spark ignited in his back yard, from probably a mile away. Firefighters could not have gotten there in time. I am so blessed.

Everyone is fine and settled back in. Many thanks to Razelle and Mark Smith who housed all of us. I cannot express the importance of being better prepared than I was to leave with your pets on short notice.

Mature Houston dog faces in the crowd

Senior dogs just have personality with which NO puppy can compete! These two precious babies were adopted from PugHearts and their parents are active volunteers with that group. Emma is on the right and I confess I forgot her older buddy's name and it was a very cute one....They were spotted at the Greater Good spay/neuter clinic.

This elderly dachshund ended up at a shelter and has so many medical problems he is not adoptable so will be going to a very nice hospice home.
He has LOTS Of heartworms and intestinal parasites and the few teeth he has are in pretty bad shape. At about 15 years old he is still very spritely and being intact, wants to take on a few of the much younger dogs! He has probably never darkened the door of a vet clinic.....sigh

This laid back baby was also spotted at the Greater Good and his name is Tex(I think)

Yea, he is neutered and on heartworm preventioni!

I like to showcase older dogs and their happy endings and devoted owners..

Oops, a youngster snuck in the blog! This is Blue, a very nice and well behaved "pibble"as we like to call them in rescue! His owner was very nice during my neuter speech and had actually tried to get him in one day at the Greater Good, but was a little late. He promised to come back, possibly to avoid getting the speech from me again:) Blue, like many dogs, was not a fan of the camera....

Can you pass the dog "drivers permit" test?

Pet rescuers usually feel that people should pass a test before getting a dog:) How well would you do? Some of the answers seem SO obvious but I have seen every one of them in my years of rescue! You might be surprised.

1-Heartworms are caused by:
   a-fleas
   b-flies
   c-mosquitoes

Mosquitos is what many of us know, but heartworm ignorance is very high in Houston. I was recently told that they are caused by spoiled canned meat.

2-Soft sided totes are great for puppies and easier to carry than plastic crates..
   a-sure
   b-no
   c-well, 1/2 of that is true

Many soft totes have been destroyed by sharp puppy teeth, from both the inside and outside, when one is put on the floor, ie. left within chewing range. They particularly like the zippers!

3-It doesn't matter how you travel with a dog in your vehicle, as long as they are contained.
   a-sure
   b-no

It does matter-none of us leave home expecting to get into a car wreck, but if you are side swiped or rear ended, the impact of a wire crate will crush a dog. It has a slightly better chance of surviving if a plastic crate breaks apart. A loose dog becomes a rapidly moving projectile as well. I hope this never happens to you, but it could.

4-It's fine to get a puppy before your elderly dog passes away so you are no tleft without a buddy.
   a-yes, they will probably get along just fine
   b-no-it is way too much stress on the older dog and they feel pushed aside
   c-rarely and only if done very carefully can this be done

Bubbles still looking for a permanent home

I am of the B category, think it is very selfish to foist a rowdy puppy on most older animals. A middle aged dog is a much better "bridge" dog. A few people are dedicated enough to keep a puppy from harrassing a senior dog.

5- Females make better pets
    a-yes, they don't "hike"
    b-no, males are actually calmer
    c-no right answer-everyone has their preferences

Many people assume that females are better just because of the hiking issue. Males are more often euthanized due to this misconception. Many males do not and some females do or show other dominant
behaviors. Once neutered, males are often calmer. Please don't automatically reject the idea of a male based on that generalization.

6-Females need to have a heat cycle before spaying and motor oil can be used on mange are both so ludicrous that they don't even warrant a separate True/False section, but they are both still believed. You don't have to admit it if you assumed either is true:) Neither is.

I wish I could get more items in for cats, so happy to have a few for all of the cat lovers out there!

These large capacity litter boxes are great for several reasons. The hood keeps most dogs from snacking on the contents(gross, but it happens) as well as keeps litter from flying all over the place. The ridges on the ramp and the ramp itself also reduces the amount of litter escaping.

As are all items from Pet Stuff Resale, these have been disinfected and are 20.00 each.

Dog Faces in the Crowd

It's treat time at doggy day care at Jester Plaza Vet Clinic. They had NO interest in me,.all eyes on Dovie!

Rica is a a 3 year old blonde chihuahua given up by a back yard breeder of shelties.She is my foster and looking for a home.

It's almost not fair that I have a job where I can drive around to lots of pet related places and see such neat babies:) This is 14 year old Snort(what a great pug name!) at Kingsland Blvd Animal Clinic getting a check up. He is happier than he looks here!

This is Lacey and most of Gracie(who has the same great face!) in their HUGE yard in Cypress( I think).

I pass by their house every day, they have a huge patio and Kuranda beds and the life of luxury. I stopped my truck in the middle of the road to get their pictures. Their momma said she rescued them near her job. Their buddy Moose's picture did not come out.

Sweetie was spotted at the new KAAWS Clinic on 529 near Queenston. She was getting a rabies vaccine and heartworm test. Of course I chatted with her owner about getting her spayed and he said he was going to. Her temperament matches her name!

This is a very well made cage intended for a ferret. Unfortunately it has several aspects that are not safe for ferrets. As an avid recycler, I want it to be reused, but properly. It looks barely used.

It is in very good condition and was built in 3 sections so easier to move than it looks, as well as being on wheels. It is 22 inches deep, 40 inches wide and a whopping 80 inches tall. The whole side of the lower section is a pull down opening.

With just a little renovation it could be used safely for small parrots. My Quaker has been watching it closely!

My reptile knowledge is limited, but think it could be used for some types of reptiles.

I would like to hear of any other uses that come to mind.

BIG BIG kennels at Pet Stuff Resale and a play yard

All eleven plastic and wire kennels fit(snugly) onto my truck yesterday, nesting and stacking nicely eventually, I missed the photo op!

Here's what I have:

The play yard is great for small dogs as the configuration is difficult for them to get their widdle paws in to climb. It is 29" tall and 12 feet long. There are no metal parts to rust so can be left outside.

This is a 48" long drop pin. Not as convenient as the folding models if it needs to be moved often, as there are multiple pieces, but if it stays stationary, the lower price vs the folding variety may be worth it. This is 65.00.

There are 2 more 48" long drop pins available, both black and have some rust. They are 55.00 each.

These two crates are 50.00 each. The one on the left is a 36" long Precision suitcase(folds down in one piece) in good shape.

The one on the right is a 42" long suitcase with some rust, the tray is not rusted thru, that is surface rust only.

In plastic crates: Furrari 550-this discontinued crate is 3 inches wider than the traditional xlarge plastic crate-30x30x40. It has plastic clamps on the sides rather than screws.

Ok, I am exaggerating, it's only 33" tall.

This is one of the neatest finds I have ever come across in 14 years of business! It can be used for either cats or dogs.

This gate attaches to either side if a door way and can be angled to accommodate various lenghts up to 12 feet. It is 29 in tall and has a pass thru gate. Additionally, small dogs cannot climb it as it has no horizontal bars. New these run about 150.00, at Pet Stuff Resale it is 75.00.

The shoe is strong enough for Mike, but surprisingly light and easy to carry.
Possibly the neatest thing is that the cover unzips for washing.

This is called a Pet Home by Pet Mate. I like that it is canvas and has windows, but it does not have a solid floor, so only for small critters. My vote would be up to about 10 lbs. If you hold by the bottom, a decent travel option. I like the curved vs squared interior for scared babies; easier to retrieve them! 9.00

Ooops, can't find the rotate button. This is also intended for low stress pets, as it has some great chewing possibilities! This is good for camping or storefront adoptions with calm babies as it is lightweight and folds up nicely. This one is in excellent condition. Pet Stuff Resale also has a red and blue one. Metal recycling for a cause part of Pet Stuff Resale's service

When I started Pet Stuff Resale way back in 1997, my goals were to save people money as well as keeping things out of landfills. Now that I live in Waller County I can burn unusable items during burn times; still a better alternative to LOTS of plastic in landfills. I go to the extent of burning plastic crates and pulling out the metal vents left over and adding them to my metal recycling pile.

Sept. 10, 2010, the front page of the Houston Chronicle had an article about Sidney Johnson, who runs a metal recycling business in nearby Waller. He had witnessed corruption in the city government and his honesty sent one or 2 people to jail. As a result, according to the story, he has been shunned, lost recycling contracts and his business has suffered tremendously.

I switched from a place where I got a few dollars for my metal stuff to giving him the recyclables. Mr Johnson is a very nice man; proud of his son Terrell at the University of Texas and his daughter LaToya at Prairie View A and M. I think that is a great cause to support, so any crate pieces or other metal that I cannot use goes to Mr Johnson.

Four happy dog endings thanks to one donor(and vets)

These four precious babies are alive because of a dedicated donor who contacts me on a regular basis to ask what I need. It is usually treatment for heartworms. That in itself is tragic because heartworms are deadly, but very inexpensive to PREVENT, horrendously expensive and painful to treat.Even though expensive, every small donation adds up fast , so I am at 2 vet clinics almost every week saving more dogs.

Houston area vets are important to this equation as well, they donate the time and expertise to fight this seemingly endless battle.( I could stack crates to the ceiling EVERY day with Houston area dogs needing treatment.) Foster people are critical, as the dogs need to be crate for 30-60 days.

At Pet Stuff Resale: rabbit cage great for ferals, kittens!

The primary tenet of Pet Stuff Resale is to save people money. This rabbit cage is a perfect example. At 32.00, it is much less expensive than a Tokyo cage or even a dog crate when one is rescuing or fostering cats. 4 feet long, it is ample enough for acclimating a feral, especially with the ramp and shelf adding another level. It has both a top and front opening for safely changing food and water. It will take a little more creativity changing out a litter box as the openings are smaller than a traditional litter box.To its advantage, the tall sides are great for containing litter, actually better than traditional cat habitats. It is ideal for kittens; they get climbing space without the cage being so tall they do not injure themselves as they learn balance. This cage is also very easy to clean.

These precious babies were turned into a shelter together as strays. They are all the same age, about 18 months old and the two rough coated ones are obviously litter mates and the 3rd smaller one may be as well. They are all altered and heartworm negative. I have been fostering them for about 6 months as they had no social skills, but I have yet to come up with good names; Eenie, Meeny and Moe didn't work, nor did Larry, Moe and Curly. Don't even suggest Huey, Louie and Dewey! The 2 rough coated ones are a male and female at 8 lbs and the other one, a 5 pounder, I call HoneyB after her lookalike Honey the Pibble. I would like to place the pair together and all 3 will need patient homes as they are still a tad spooky. Of course al adult homes are needed in ths case. They are crate trained and skilled at both burrowing and snuggling.They are also fine with other dogs, even bigger ones.

Terrier rescued........for the 4th or 5th time, needs lifetime home

This girl deserves so much better than the life she has led so far, much of which is murky. She ended up at a shelter about 3 years ago and was soon

adopted, what great luck! Well, not really, she showed up again last week at the same shelter as a stray....hhmmmmm. Thanks to microchip technology, her adopter was contacted, so yea! Well, not really, turns out she had been

given away shortly after adoption; the next owner didn't realize she was chipped when she turned her in as a stray...The original adopter was "incensed"at her supposed friend, but not too incensed to reclaim the dog. After all, she has a child now....

She was advised that the dog had been allowed to get heartworms and combined with a massive fear of being picked up, she was not considered to be adoptable. Oh, well...she declined to go get her.

I walked past this dogs cage several days in a row and tried to get her to let me pick her up....nothing doing, she wanted me to see ALLLLLLL of her teeth.

I kept going because she let a few people pick her up even though

inconsistently....

I had her signed out to me permanently instead of fostering.

The first night was terrible and I don't mind admitting that I gave up on her,

thinking of the liability. My plan to have a vet check her out for physical problems wasn't needed as she tolerated some handling, just not moi!

I didn't need any more behaviorial problems.

She of course let me pick her up in the morning so I changed my mind, whereupon she reverted back when it was time to come in...but I decided

to chart her responses to keep my sanity and stop mentally seesawing~ This enabled me to see increasing consistency.

In less than a week she is quite well behaved, making me wonder what instigated it in the first place..

Next week we will begin heartworm treatment. I will be funding that myself

and adopting her out when it is completed to someone who will make their home her LAST home.

WOW, a great sale at CAP thrift store where all proceeds go to benefit the animals. This is both Saturday and Sunday in both sections; there is a regular area and an annex. (Pet Stuff Resale has pet items in front of the
annex 12-4 both days) There are just a few more expensive items that are
not 1/2 price and they are marked.

The thrift store is in the same center as Citizens for Animal Protection,
11925 Katy Freeway, 77079. Hours are 10:00-5:30 on Sat and noon to 5:30
on Sunday.

Items run from household, clothes and books to furniture, collectibles
and art.

Please keep the thrift store in mind for both purchasing and donating
useable items. Donating unuseable items just adds to their haul off costs.

You are also welcome to visit the shelter and bring newspapers and puppy and kitten food(no colored kibbles, please) this weekend to help the

Devil outfit for tiny dog at Pet Stuff Resale

This 4 lb chihuahua was dumped at a shelter by his owner and is very precious, so the outfit is definitely on the WRONG body! Leo was less than thrilled by both the camera and the outfit, so not interested in showing
just how cute this is. It does have a pointed tail and stuffed ears and says "Devilish Dog" on the back. (The neck is not stretched out, Leo just flat refused to let the hoodie part stay on his head!) I did try a more accommodating canine model, but this doesn't fit a 5 lb chihuahua.

This play yard is a frequently requested item at Pet Stuff Resale for several reasons. They can be used outside as they are plastic so do not rust. They are actually sturdier than the metal xpens, so harder to
knock over by rambunctious pupsters. The best part for me is that the "hole" configuration makes it tougher
for agile Yorkies and chihuahuas to climb; a problem with the metal xpens with vertical and horizontal (ie, perching) bars.
This folds easily for mobility and the walls are 31" tall. It is great for small dogs and dogs being fostered for heartworms.

More heartworm positive dogs saved thanks to Pepsi

We are now up to 27 dogs saved with the help of the 5,000.00 grant I was awarded in March thru the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. This includes 82 lb Leo, a chocolate lab turned into the SPCA when his owners divorced. This put a huge burden on Lab Rescue of Southeast Rescue, so I was very happy to provide his treatment.
Today in the CyFair section of the paper Valerie Sweeten of the Houston Chronicle did a nice story
on the cause and mentioned Chestnut Animal Hospital. Dr Snyder and her staff have aided me TREMENDOUSLY since 1986 in my rescue efforts. Chestnut Rehab is a separate 501 (c)(3) nonprofit
that has been handling the drug needed to treat the Pepsi dogs and have graciously offered to extend
additional help. Donations are tax deductible and 100% is used for treating the dogs with immiticide.
Very few nonprofits can make that statement.

Houston is the number one market for the use of the drug Immiticide. Instead of that horrendous statistic, I would like Houston to be the number one user for the use of PREVENTION.

This is Chicken, saved by heartworm treatment and adopted! He got his name because his bark sounds just like a chicken..

This is Jupiter, a darling 5 year old terrier mix, maybe a huge 8 lbs. He is being treated for heartworms

thru a shelter.

This stunning beauty is 5 year old Franchesca, also maybe 8 lbs. After a little bout with kennel cough, she

is scheduled thru a shelter to be waited on like royalty at Rover Oaks Katy during her treatment.I normally do not show pictures of dogs before they are available for adoption, but I wanted to show just 2 of the many, many dogs in Houston with heartworms and

how many more we could be saving. There are many more that breed specific rescue groups have taken in that need treating as well.

The Pepsi grant I was awarded has allowed more dogs to be treated, especially bigger dogs that are normally too expensive to treat.(Sheltie Sanctuary and Golden Beginnings, you have been a delight to help!) That 5,000.00 funding is winding down, with 20 dogs treated so far, so

I am looking for other sources so this life saving work can continue.

Chestnut Rehab is a 501(c)(3) non profit connected to (but scrupulously separate from) Chestnut Animal Hospital in Bellaire, Tx.

It is a bare bones operation, 100% of any donation is not only tax deductible, but the Rehab

keeps costs as low as possible. It is not intended to do mass rescue but help in small ways and

heartworm treatments are a huge way to help without depleting Rehabs staff and operations.

New Kidco metal walk thru gate and extension in at Pet Stuff Resale

This is still in the original box. The white center gate extends from 29" to 37", the extension is 12 1/2". It is
pressure mounted so no damage to door jambs. It is 29" tall. All of the bars are vertical so dogs cannot climb it and the spacing between bars is 2 1/4 ", so most pets cannot squeeze thru it.

The original invoices were still inside; the gate was 89.95 and the extension was 34.95.
At Pet Stuff Resale they are 70.00 together.

TIP: I purchased this at a thrift type place where it had probably been donated. Both the invoice and the boxes had the original buyers name, address and even phone number. Please be sure to remove or obliterate
any personal information on anything you sell, donate or even throw out. I see this fairly often.

Ch 13 TV films Pepsi heartworm story with Pet Stuff Resale clients and rescue volunteers

Jester Plaza Vet Clinic hosted Ch 13 Executive Producer

Molly O'Connor, cameraman Mike and intern Ann for a Pepsi Refresh Project story about canine heartworms. This is the program from which I received the 5,000.00 grant from Pepsi thanks to many people voting in an online competition. Volunteers from

HOPE and sheltie rescue brought their dogs Frankie and Milo, who have either been treated or

are getting treatment. Joann, co owner of Fondren 5 Star kennel and regular customer of Pet Stuff Resale,(Thank you!) brought Buddy the black lab who was the hit of the interview. He is ready for his permanent home. I brought foster dachshund Sam, who weathered me being interviewed in the heat

at NOON, right after his shot-very poor planning on my part! (Dr Burda was interviewed in the air conditioning, hmmmm)

Molly and Mike did a great job of showcasing the horrendous problem of heartworms in Houston, a totally preventable disease. "Prevention is so much cheaper than treatment" is my manta. Treatment is also

incredible painful.

Many thanks to the volunteers and also to Dr Burda for his help, as well as Tricia Burda who did a

great job of facilitating our little circus!

Those important bellybands for male dogs available In Houston and at Dog Show

A very important accessory for many small male dogs will be at the Houston Dog Show this weekend.
Bellybands are are literally a life saver for male dogs as often adopters will want to "get rid" of a dog who marks or does submissive urinating. Male dogs get adopted at a much lower rate than females because
many adopters will not even consider a male dog, even one who has no such behaviorial problems.
This is particularly sad as more males come into rescue and shelters than females and are often calmer pets
than females after neutering.

Bellybands and other doggie stuff will be at the Carlisle Groom and Board booth this weekend -RS43.

More dog faces in the crowd

Several people commented positively when I did a "dog faces in the crowd" before, so I am doing another one!

This is Raven and her eyes always look like this, not just at the vet~another dog not interested in a camera....

So many parts of my job are fun; seeing so many different dogs is one of them. The 2 babies above were terribly cute together and didn't really want to stop sniffing for a photo op:)

All of these dogs were at the Greater Good just by coincidence.
This is Sandy with her foster person who had found her 2 years ago. Sandy was getting a last heartworm test
before meeting her new mom.
So many aspects of rescue, especially with the economy(or using the economy as an excuse), are sad, so I
make a point of finding happy endings or positive rescue stories to share with you.

Pepsi Refresh Project helps more Houston heartworm positive dogs

In the last 2 days 8 more dogs have gone thru partial or complete heartworm treatment, thanks to the 5,000.00 grant awarded by Pepsi. This is Penny and Rex above. Wanda and Sasha also received
their first shot of the long treatment, they will get 2 more shots in 30 days. Donna Reed (The vet on this dog is so young she didn't know who Donna Reed was:) and Owen received their first shots as well.
Gypsy is a not only beautiful, but SO well behaved, shy Golden Retriever mix. She completed her treatment
today. She did not want her picture taken, but I will get one to post because she is such a nice dog.

All of these dogs are in all volunteer foster homes with different groups and will be available for adoption

after their treatment. All are already altered and current on vaccines including Rabies.
Pet Stuff Resale is donating all of the gas to get the dogs and get to the various vet clinics.
A little under half of the grant has been used at this point. A big hound, 4 dachshunds and a little shy terrier

Bingo a hit with Pepsi Refresh Project and PRP update

This precious little chihuahua/rat terrier has gone from heartworm positive stray to TV and blog star! He first came onto my radar thru my bud, HOPE cat volunteer Lynn. His face was not only picked out of several pictures to be featured on a future blog article about the grant award providing heartworm treatments, but
will also be in the 15 sec ABC spot currently being edited for local showing. What most people won't see is a great shot of Bingo getting tired of me fliming with a horse and he snaps at Stormy, then jumps back as if he realizes how big his opponent was!

Most importantly is that dogs are receiving treatment. Cinco, from All Texas Dachshund Rescue was the
first dog treated. A red dachshund mix male, you can probably guess what day in May he came into rescue.
TR from Country Hearts, a large male sweetie hound with Kate Harward and Buddy, a black lab being fostered by JoAnn at Fondren 5 Star Kennel (regular client of Pet Stuff Resale) have also been treated.

Part of this project is being done to honor dogs that were not able to be saved, due to owner neglect. Pepsi
was a wonderful black chow pulled from BARC and scheduled to be the first dog treated. Sadly pneumonia on top of a heavy load of heartworms took his life just as he was being scheduled. Thanks to Laura for loving him.

Many more dogs are scheduled and vets are being their usual generous selves donating the time. Many, many thanks to Chestnut Animal Hospital in Bellaire, whose connected non profit arm is functioning as HQ for this incredible project.
None of this could have been possible without the Pepsi Refresh Project and LOTS of willing voters!

Stainless steel cages in at Pet Stuff Resale

Stainless steel is such a time saver in the pet world. It cleans faster than plastic(I have LOTS of experience
in this area!) , rarely stains and lasts longer than any other material I have ever seen.

Multipurpose Plastic Play Yard popular request at Pet Stuff Resale

This plastic play yard is even more versatile than a wire exercise pen. The hole configuration of the walls reduces climbing, very common in chihuahuas and yorkies. It can also be used for small kittens and rabbits and guinea pigs.

Pet Stuff Resale celebrates Earth Day with a little PSR history

Established in 1997, Pet Stuff Resale came into being because I saw a need
for people to save money when their puppy outgrew its crate and needed a new one. I also saw things thrown out when the pet died. I was actually surprised that no one had thought of this idea before and so far, it appears to still be the only business of its kind in the entire US.

My secondary goal was to keep crates and other pet items out of area landfills; I have made many trips to C and D Scrap Metal in the Heights.
Now I have a trailer and look in Craig's List when it fills up and someone
comes and takes it to recycling for me!

I had an ethical dilemma about burning plastic but have decided that is a lesser impact than taking up so much space in a landfill, as bulky as plastic is.
Fortunately judicious burning is allowed in Waller County; I only have to
landfill during burn ban times.

Many pet items can be reused as different habitats. Once a finch flight
cage became a great snake habitat and a long bird cage was perfect for raising a tiny kitten. This also makes my job incredibly fun.

Pet Stuff Resale also rents and takes trade ins, further extending the reduce, reuse, recycle circle.
Rebel, above(terrible picture) loved this childs napping cot. Unfortunately for her it was sold immediately
after the picture was taken for an um, plus sized pug. Both the cots and childs sleeping bags are sold often
at Pet Stuff Resale for spoiled dogs who deserve them. Rebel herself was "recycled" or actually "dumped"
at a shelter when she was 12; I adopted her and she is one of the best dogs I have ever had.

Tokyo cage(Cat condo) has multiple uses

This is a great multiple use cage for foster people, vet clinics and people with limited storage space.
Momma cats with kittens or after separating them is a great use. Feral cat acclimation is another popular use. The ferret cage is a little diffferent, but this can also be used for them, as well as small parrots.

This is a generic brand that is very similiar to the Midwest brand, which is a very good brand.
I specifically recommend not getting the Pro Select brand. Even after they made improvements,
I am sure due to consumer complaints, it is not the same quality and as long as these cages last,
get the better construction. This folds up nicely, can be stored under or behind a sofa when not in use. The folded up wire fits into the base

This one came into Pet Stuff Resale without the wheels; they are inexpensive and available at any hardware store. I prefer them with out the wheels as dust cannot accumulate under it. The shelves are rather difficult to install(in any Tokyo cage); one attachment has broken, can still be used as a lower shelf. I can also show you how to make an easier shelf.

I have never learned why it is called a Tokyo cage. It is confusing to call it a cat condo because
to some people that is a carpeted item.

2 Blue Heeler mix sisters need home together in Houston

These 18 month old sisters are great fun and play nonstop, keeping each other entertained all day. They
are very shy around a camera; in the pictures they almost look like wild animals I found in the woods!
I have fostered them since they were 4 weeks old; I am sometimes criticized for keeping fosters too long,
but am particularly glad I did here. Their behavior has changed somewhat as adults; they will gang up
on a submissive dog now, but get along with other assertive dogs.
Mom was a blue heeler, the owner said a chihuahua was also one of the daddies. They are both under 15 lbs
and are at full weight. They are spayed and crate trained.
Mandy is the darker one and is a little dominant over Pandy, the lighter one.

These incredibly lucky dogs don't know anything about the down economy. They don't know just how lucky they are, having their expensive treatment paid for. They don't know how many dogs don't get foster homes.
They only know they are now clean and fed and part of someones family.

All 3 of these dogs are alive because of a dedicated anonymous donor who feels our rescue angst that
dogs have to die only due to their owners neglect. This person decided that something needed to be done
and created a project that is funding the drug immiticide used for treatment. These are just some of the
dogs saved so far; 3 others were treated this week.

Houston dogs live due to Pepsi Refresh grant!

People all over the US have been voting every day (some for 2 months straight!) in the Pepsi Refresh Project in hopes of a 5,000.00 grant to treat heartworm positive dogs in Houston. This is a major medical problem and expensive to treat. The sad situation is that it is so much cheaper to prevent than treat. The burden falls
on shelters and rescue groups to, in essence, clean up after ignorant or noncompliant owners. In the current economy, many fewer dogs have been able to be saved, so the grant potential has literally been a lifesaver.
Thanks to Pepsi for providing the resources for me
to help.

This little boy and the buddy he came in with will benefit
from every ones hard work.

Help this rescue pom get a new name

This precious 7 year old baby needs multiple medical issues addressed, as well as a name. He was turned in as a stray; he needs neutering, a dental and some major orthopedic "fixin". He has a luxating patella so severe it makes his knee curve under his belly; his only complaint is that he can't switch sides when it comes
to marking my 18 pine trees!
He is also fighting pneumonia, which will give me time to come up with a creative fundraising project for the
knee. A certain vet sometimes slips during surgery and a dog ends up neutered, it's weird, so we're probably looking at 550.00 for dental and knee.
Thank you God for all of my vets!
He is heartworm negative and weighs maybe 7 lbs.
Now to the most important task, a new name!
His working name is Elfin. Please add your original suggestions here to give him a new name to go with
his new start!

It's raining cats and chihuahuas in Houston rescue

Kitten season runs from March to November in Houston, where more kittens are available for adoption than there are homes. Even sadder, the availability of kittens overwhelms shelters and rescue groups with "less adoptable" adult cats. Talk about age discrimination! I don't get it. I am currently fostering Stephen Lee the kitten, who is a definite deterrent to me fostering a kitten in the future. He is on the left in the orange cat picture.(ok, he is really a cream tabby, not orange) He is very cute but very energetic.Fortunately the adult male cats have pretty much raised him; the females have tried to ignore him. SL was handed to me when he weighed 8 oz and is named after Stephen L. Burda, DVM of Jester Plaza Vet Clinic who saved his life(mostly by email :) when he had multiple problems. One eye is slightly smaller than the other as well.
Temple on the right was himself raised by a surrogate mom after his biological mom killed the rest of his litter
and he in turn has helped raise Stephen Lee. He is a year old and named after a type of Florida orange.

The top picture features another overabundant breed rescue "client". Chihuahuas are everywhere! Yes, Paris Hilton did contribute to this problem, but so did Traders Village in my opinion and Taco Bell was the original criminal. Their demand at shelters has gone way down. 3 year old Rica on the left feels discriminated against. She came from a backyard breeder of a different breed, who surrendered those dogs to that rescue. I was asked take Rica(and her heartworms). She has been successfully treated and has also settled down a bunch. She is quite the snuggler and despite the picture, does get along with cats.

Not showing well, but also an affectionate, sometimes sportingly feisty baby, is Tucker. He is a 2-3 year old
declawed Siamese male, dumped at a shelter by an owner who could no longer be bothered. He has been
a great coparent to SL and of course gets along with dogs.

All of these babies need permanent homes...outta of mine! They all are used to dry food only and none are
picky eaters nor have any health problems.

I have neglected to give an updated status, I am so sorry!

We were stuck at #18 then #16 place for much of the 1st Pepsi Refresh promotion last month. I decided not to try again in this monthly project because I didn't want to be intrusive to people. Pepsi however automatically reentered
every one from #11 to #100.(yea!) We have not been below #9 yet this month. Since they fund the top
10 projects in the voting, I am so pleased and excited that so many people have stuck with it.

This is Emme, a silky terrier mix, who has been waiting for heartworm treatment since November 09. I will be fostering her as

long as it takes. She is 3 years old and weighs 14.6 lbs. She is so very shy she will need a fairly quiet, all adult home. She says a home with other small dogs and/or cats is ok.

Wheel Away transports dogs in style, saves your back

The Wheel Away is one of the sturdiest doggie "totes" I have ever evaluated. In fact, it is so conducive
to being rolled on the ground that I do not recommend it to be used as a back pack, for which it is also
made. This is the medium size, up to maybe 15 lbs. (I never trust manufacturer recommendations due to experience, I always test with real animals.) Tugboat weighs 12 lbs.
The materials are canvas and mesh. It does zip all the way to enclose the dog entirely if wanted.
This is in excellent condition. I do not think it was ever even used.

The hesitant model Tugboat is my own dog. I fostered his litter (during Hurricane Ike!) after his owner turned them in as an unexpected litter. I so hope he got the mom spayed, he did keep her.
She was a Blue Heeler and he said one of the dads was a chihuahua. I thought Tugboat was the runt, but then figured out his size is the chihuahua influence. When even his female littermates weighed 2
lbs., he was barely 1 lb.

(His 2 sisters Mandy and Pandy are still up for adoption. They are stunning looking, look like long haired miniature Blue heelers at 15 lbs each. Yes, I have pictures.)

Cat Heaven at Jester Plaza Vet Clinic

The headline and pictures could be the entire blog post! This is the neatest set up I have ever seen
for cats and a great "chill out" room for them. This also doubles as an exam room for exotics. I think it also belongs in cat boarding facilities. Is kitty day care next? For a room like this, cats would travel!

This set up was designed by Tricia Burda, wife
of Dr Steve Burda of Jester Plaza Vet Clinic.
I was so amazed but not suprised by her talent.
She could market the plans for this set up.
I sat in a chair and just soaked up the neatness
of this cat heaven.
The yellow box even has a hidden door to accommodate a litter box.
Those are real tree branch pieces up there also..
Yes, that is a kitty door at the bottom.

Wouldn't ferals have a great time in here? They would never get caught again:)

I did not realize the post would send you directly to the Pepsi website before reading the original post. I do apologize.
Pepsi is sponsoring a promotion to award grants for good ideas across the entire United States. Heartworm
positive dogs are so common in Houston and so expensive to treat, I entered this competition to help rescue groups and shelters with some of the drug used to treat heartworms, Immiticide. The problem has gotten much worse with the economy.People are not buying the prevention as much and relinquishing their pets, now infected. The burden
of more costs added to fewer donations is creating
horrendous problems in the rescue world.

The idea is currently in #16th place and they only fund the top 10 in each category; I am in the 5,000.00 category. All you have to do is vote every day, just until the 28th of February. Please also ask any animal
folks to vote and spread the word via their social networks.
Both of these dogs are alive today due to donated immiticide, each of which expensive bottle only treats
a 22 lb dog.

Lola the Bulldog loves going to the Spa!

As I was standing in Copperfield Grooming chatting with Kat the owner, this lovely lady barrelled into the shop, dragging her owner over to the self service tubs.I couldn't believe it! Lola's owners told me she loves coming in for her baths. It was so cute I had to go get my camera and share her excitement.
Her buddy, whose name I have forgotten, (Benz?) was
the total opposite, he was underwhelmed by the entire
ordeal..His daddy had to load him unwillingly into his tub.
Each dog thought the other one was nuts!

Kat donates groomings regularly for my foster dogs so I
had been happy to loan her some crates for cat neuters.
What a nice surprise to run into this family outing while picking them back up.
Pet Stuff Resale buys, sells and rents new and used pet supplies and I have a TON of fun in the process.

Dante, Whippet mix with broken leg, looking for a home in March

Dante came into a shelter as a stray with a broken
radius and ulna and a great personality! He obviously plays well with others. He is also crate
trained.
Dante has a darling set of spotted Spock ears as well. (It was impossible to hold him, watch Devon
and get Dante to face me for a picture when he
HAD to play!)
He is only a year old, but still very well behaved and weighs about 20 lbs.
He is not chewing his cast as much as he was
and is very patient about wearing a sock and baggie
when he goes outside.
My many years with greyhound adoptions gave me an interest in orthopedic cases, so it has been enjoyable having him in foster care. I will be equally happy when he finds his great new permanent home!

Survey: Does having local wholesalers affect your buying decisions at Pet Stuff Resale?

As well as recycled pet supplies in good condition, Pet Stuff Resale sells new cat trees and new wire crates
in 5 sizes. The crates are from a pretty good sized local wholesaler and I really like keeping the local economy flourishing. The new cat trees are an even better cog in the cycle of Houston's economy as they are handcrafted by one local artisan. Furthermore, he helps with recycling by getting his new carpet in end rolls, keeping them out of landfills, so outreaching the green aspect even further. The big pet stores just cannot compete with either of those factors.
However, Pet Store Resale is not about me, but my consumers, so I have been discussing with people if these are features and benefits that are important or not. I get the feeling that people say it makes a
difference because they think that's what I want to hear:)
The end reason for my survey is to decide if I should add this information to my brochures or not. Jan, my wonderful bud and adopter in Dallas does the updates on the brochures and we are discussing this right now.
Please post your honest feedback. If you have animal friends who might have an opinion, please forward this for their input.

The main reason Pet Stuff Resale was founded way back in 1997 was to save people money on pet supplies, but I confess I fell into this idea accidentally only a couple of years ago.
My precious German Pinscher Dino piled under one when it fell off of a chair
and I couldn't get him out of it until mealtime. Then I tried it on the small foster chihuahuas and they loved it. In the blog archives is a post
about the "rodents" crawling in behind me to get into my sleeveless parachute
material vest.

While the current freezing weather is perfect for a sleeping bag bed, my dogs will burrow in one in July.

Pet Stuff Resale now stocks these regularly. Prices range from 8.00-17.00,
much less expensive than most dog beds.

This is a great way to recycle as well!
Devon is modeling 2 different sizes, but he is not an underneath snuggler!

Houston veterinarians shop at Pet Stuff Resale!

Dr Kathy Sutton is a repeat customer at Pet Stuff Resale as well as a great friend to rescue while she was a practicing vet. She has helped many foster dogs in the years I have known her. My favorite "save" of hers

was a wonderfly mellow dachshund who came into a shelter about ready to whelp and with a major load of heartworms, not a dog a shelter could usually save. Dr Sutton was able to spay her and save all 4 puppies!

Sweetness was treated for heartworms and adopted out. (She and her daughter Faith Abby have both been mentioned in this blog)

Dr Sutton is pictured here with her own precious rescue dog, whose owner no longer wanted. I wish I had taken a closeup of his holiday attire, he likes to wear outfits. She was buying large dog crates and an x pen from meand I met her at her former vet clinic to deliver; I keep on the look out for certain dog items she likes. I can do that for you also! Dr Sutton was also wearing a beautiful (ok I am going to be tacky here, HUGE) new diamond wedding ring, a present from her husband Mike for their 30th wedding anniversary on Jan 5th. Congrats to both of them.

Dr Bill Folger, cat vet expert, ordered a new 6 ft cat tree for his wife Michelle for Christmas, sort of. He said it was also to keep the cats off the tree! I suspect it helped but not completely! I delivered it to his house and

he was nice enough to help me as the 6 footers are BIG and HEAVY. Thanks to Michelle for fostering about 50 cats/kittens in 2009.

Dr Folger ordered from Pet Stuff Resale because Dr Courtney Forbes had gotten a cat tree from me and liked it so much and must have mentioned it to Dr Folger when she took her cat to him..

Foster dogs and sweaters need new homes at Pet Stuff Resale:)

Flan the chihuahua is now all of 14 weeks old and waiting for his new home. He is crate "aware", not quite trrained yet and has learned to whip out of his sweater in seconds flat! He plays nicely by himself with stuffies, but also likes to play with other dogs and LOVES to run thru the leaves at the park across the street.
He was turned in at a shelter as a stray at 4 weeks, who would leave a tiny puppy outside?

Kirby the 7 year old cocker (I thought he was 10) has no interest in removing his sweater, he likes them, wanted a new one on our last trip to Petsmart. He wants a home who handles his slight dominance with
a firm but gentle manner; he understands immediately that he has pushed his luck just a hair too far. He is
a very nice dog, TOTALLY housebroken, quiet and a great walking dog. He has the demeanor of a 4 year old dog. His owner died and he has been in my care since August. He has learned to get along with other dogs and loves to ride in the truck, can't figure out why we sometimes walk right past it!

Both dogs are available for adoption thru a shelter and so are both sweaters for 4.00 and 7.00 at Pet Stuff Resale!

Febreeze Flameless Luminary a great present for pet owners anytime.

What a great present this was from my good friend Greta Jean, who is a Foo-Foo Queen, but this is practical also. The flameless part is a self explanatory safety feature for any pet owner, who can remember turned over, broken and chewed possessions from their first day of fostering or ownership of an animal.
The aroma is delightful;I received green tea citrus. In fact it was a little strong for my small master bedroom
because I have to be extra careful with scents around my macaw, Harpo. It is perfect in the living room.

The price, at 14.99 (at Walgreens) was a little stiff for a self proclaimed tightwad (which Greta knows well!), but having tried it, I will repurchase. I have counted 4 dead "half" candles around my house due to wicks burning out, so the price is worth it for the long term results. Each luminary lasts 4 hours
and can be turned off merely by raising the little scent holder. The refills are very inexpensive and grab your
heart, the batteries are included!
The luminary is part ofthe Febreeze Home Collection with similiar items and is easy to find using Google.
I have not been paid for this recommendation. This is just the best aroma difuser I have ever used.

Precious Dog Faces in Houston

These faces grabbed my attention, all for different reasons. The retriever at the top was patiently waiting for his owner who was in a donut shop near Tomball; I am very partial to older dog faces.
Pancho on the left has just about one of the neatest faces I have ever seen on a dog! He did not want his picture taken and his owner was very patient while I tried repeatedly to get Pancho to look ..just for a second!
The tiny chi girl on the right had the sniffles and her owner was looking for a vet; I so hope she found one
for this little pink princess.

These cute faces caught my eye this week at Becky's. They are enjoying doggie day care, complete with
a big chair in the back of the picture! Becky used to be in with Kingsland Blvd Animal Clinic and now is right next door. She is so good that my friend Sheila has to book 6 weeks in advance to get her dog Chase groomed and won't go anywhere else.
There are also lots of foo foo items for sale for the discriminating dog!
As with any of my recommendations, Fireplug Bed and Bath doesn't even know I am doing this and I can't
be influenced to promote a pet business in which I don't have full confidence.

2 declawed cats dumped by different owners need happier ending

Frankie was left at a vet clinic overnight in a small crate with a note saying
his owner had lost their job. He is a 3 year old blue tabby and very l o n g.

Tucker was dumped at a shelter because his owner "no longer had time for him". He is a Siamese mix and VERY affectionate. Tucker is about 2 years old.

Both were so hissy at the shelter they could not be put up for adoption without some chill time,but have settled in nicely at my house. They are with other cats and small dogs. There have been no issues living with cats that are not declawed.

8.2 lb pupster needs a new knee and a new name

This one year old LIVELY male(yorkie mix?) obviously has belonged to someone recently; he is clean and heartworm negative. Why he is not neutered and microchipped is beyond me. Two of us could not get him to look at the camera, he was a little wild man. He was just as squirmy at the vet. This injury is rather old and needs either fixing or amputation. I was hoping he could just be put up for adoption as a special needs dog, but
the vet evaluation proved that would not be responsible
rescue protocol. The "fixit" is estimated to be 750.00(very reasonable) and amputation willbe 350.00. Shelter resources are never flush so this is not a dog that could be saved in the current economy.....however with a couple of dollars here and there and 2 people tell 2 other people he could have a happy life.
A generous donor instantly wrote a check for 150.00 today without even seeing a picture of the dog, so I am hopeful.

Next he needs a name. Due to his activity level, I looked at a naming site under traits and
found several for active dogs. My choices are Deuce, Boogie(I could all night long) and Nitro.
Please vote for your favorite. Several people have indicated problems trying to comment on previous blog posts, so please let me know if that happens.

Easy way to help cats and kittens at BARC in Houston

BARC(animal control) is in dire need of disposable litter boxes and newspapers; they are using paper plates
temporarily for litter pans. The cardboard bottoms of canned pet food are perfect for litter boxes, small and
disposable, so keep an eye out at pet stores. If you can snag any from grocery stores before they are crushed, that would be great. Of course, not just pet food ones there, any cardboard base/tray will work:)
(Don't get me started on why permanent litter boxes are not used.)

BARC is also in need of newspapers so please save those as well.

I will be happy to be a drop off point; since I sell in front of the Greater Good every weekend 12-4, you
can bring there or email me for alternative connecting.

I like projects like this where we can make a difference and not open our checkbooks!

Kitten in a ferret cage, chihuahua in an aquarium?

Stephen Lee(named after the vet who saved his life) came to me as a rescue kitten weighing a whopping 8 oz. Housing for him proved difficult as he
was so tiny he could slip thru a wire cage and to be living in full time
a plastic one was too confining. A friend had just given me a rectangular
bird cage that was perfect, tiny bar spacing and a big enough opening
for a small litter box. (I used a metal Twinings Tea tin!). I used a waffle cloth towel so he wouldn't get his claws caught in the loops of a regular towel. He now weighs 16 oz and too big for that cage so today I moved him to a tall ferret cage and wrapped the ladder with a washcloth so he wouldn't get caught on the rails. He LOVES the increased climbing possibilities and is a tiny bit more coordinated to handle the height. I should have taken pictures.

Last Christmas I was selling during an Open House and it was quite chilly,
so I put my foster chihuahua in the aquarium shown. It was perfect, as it kept the wind off of him and people could still see him. Of course the sweater he had on was for sale:)He was a great "hook" to my booth.

As I posted last week, Romeo was turned into a shelter BY HIS OWNERS in this horrible condition; mange so bad he had no fur, secondary infection from scratching, heartworms and a permanent
limp. Of course he wasn't altered because they were breeding him. The biggest obstacle he
faced was the broken jaw. He can eat alright but the jaw will deteriorate without surgery soon; he has been in foster care for over a year being rehabbed.

This is Linda, whom I met when she and her husband Allen adopted a senior chihuahua, Ricky, from me.

I have mentioned Linda in a previous post as me being her personal shopper. Her dog Micah has his own toddler bed from Pet Stuff Resale. Having been to their home I know their tastes and all of their dogs (and turtles and chickens). That makes it great fun when I am roaming thru my inventory haunts and something jumps out at me that would be perfect for their brood.

About once a quarter we meet and she goes thru my truck bed and picks out what she likes,

which is about 95% of what I bring. She insists on buying lunch EVERY time and we each think we have the better end of this great relationship.

This precious 3 year old came into a shelter over a year ago. He would have been immediately euthanized at most shelters due to his medical needs. He had absolutely
no hair due to sarcptic mange and deep skin infection from scratching, was horribly emaciated, limping from a permanent leg injury, a cracked jaw and of course heavily loaded with heartworms. Not surprisingly, he also had a serious distrust of humans.

Due to dedicated, unwavering care by Rebecca the Poodle Queen, Romeo now has hair!
He has been treated for heartworms.
He is learning how to play like a dog should and to relate to humans.
He has picked up weight and does not appear to have problems eating.
Our wonderful vet at Westbury, Dr Chalkley, examined his jaw and said wiring it is possible and he shouldn't have any major problems after that it done. The jaw will deteriorate if it is not fixed fairly soon.

Here's where you can help inexpensively. Pet Stuff Resale is raffling off a gorgeous Queen afghan in shades of green, mauve and cream for 1.00 a ticket. It will be displayed in the Annex part of the Citizens for Animal Protection Thrift store, which is just to the left of the Greater Good. There will be a big bowl(which will move around, so I can't say it is in a certain place!) Just put your name and a phone number on any white 3x5card(to keep all cards equal). Ask anyone you can to enter. The winner will be announced on Sunday Dec 13th at the CAP Holiday Open House.

These 5 precious furkids are all very lucky for several reasons. They all came into a shelter with heartworms,which prevents their adoption(dogs should never be adopted out with heartworms). The number of heartworm positive dogs in Houston is horrendous and many cannot be saved. In these cases foster families were found to house them for the 8-10 weeks and vets were kind enough to donate or discount their expensive treatment.

As a veteran rescue person, it bothers me that so many pet owners do not have their dogs on heartworm prevention when they can find money for other things. The treatment is not only expensive, it is time consuming for the shelter or rescue group and very painful for the dog.

I wish owners had to witness the shots.

Adoption chihuahuas model camo jacket at Pet Stuff Resale

Cricket has been featured on this blog before; he was found wandering with a broken leg and had to

This is one of the most frequent questions I get, so decided to show one of my sources.
This is a flea market outside of College Station that is full to the road on Sundays; I was there on a Saturday(ok, I was up there visiting a vet also!) when the place is almost deserted.
(I sometimes drive up on Sunday before driving back to sell in front of the Greater Good near I 10 and Dairy Ashford.

Finding things for clients really makes my job fun and I actually found an aquarium set up at one of the maybe 5 tables that were there. That struck me as so funny that I had to take a picture to post here.

The answer to the inventory question is I buy anywhere I can, often from previous
customers, vets, groomers, Craigslist, inquiries from my truck signs, thrift stores, even deserted flea markets
and some places I accidentally run into.

Yorkie gets Tailgate pet exam at Kinglsand Blvd Vet Clinic

Scotty was allegedly left at someones house by his owner who never came back. Several months later he was dropped off at an animal shelter in dire need of a dental and actually a bath also, as well as flea meds...

He began hacking a little and needed to see a vet to determine if what he had was normal "Yorkie Snort" or collapsing trachea or was really sick. I try not to spread upper respiratory into a vet clinic, so usually vets are kind enough to come outside for a tailgate exam! Dr Shows had just come out of surgery so was glad for the break and it was beautiful outside anyway.

He pronounced him healthy enough to go for his dental surgery.

Scotty is 8 years old and neutered, as well as heartworm negative. He weighs a whopping 4.6 lbs. He will be looking for an all adult home when his hair grows back in.

Vets pick up the slack for owner neglect.

This is Dawson. He came into a shelter not only being 9 years old, but with horrendous teeth, emaciated, testicular cancer and of course, heartworms. In the best of economies he would not be considered for fostering and medical care due to his age and extent of medical problems. He is only alive because I thought it would be good practice for a new vet at Westbury Animal Hospital and they agreed. He is named after her. Dr. Dawson ended up not being available and so my regular vet saint Dr. Jeff Chalkley got him fixed right up anyway. Now Dawson is undergoing the very painful heartworm treatment and not doing very well. Dr. Chalkley will be inducted as the new President of the Harris County Veterinary Medical Association next month. I am so blessed to have him helping in rescue! There are not adequate words for the former owner.

Kingsland Blvd Vet Clinic Halloween Pet Costume Contest

When Oscar the Grouch came thru the crowd to enter the contest, everyone automatically said "That is the winner!" The owner said this 10 year old poodle mix
was totally comfortable having green food color being put on it and riding around in
the can.
Second place went to Bruno the cat who weighed about 22 lbs and rode around in his crate on a cart and his orange witches hat, never once trying to remove it. I am sorry his picture did not come out.
As a football fan I voted for this duo who also wore their outfits all afternoon with little complaint.
The Kingsland vets have helped me in rescue off(only didn't when I lived inside the Loop) and on since 1986 and are wonderful to the many animals they treat for several rescue organizations. More than a few furries are alive today because of their efforts.

My house faces the community park and Kirby LOVES running over to roll in the grass.

He also got away from me once and ran 3/10's of a mile down the road,which is a lot longer than

it sounds when one is in a long dress and flat shoes! He was only stopped by the edge of a

guys cattle pen and I had had to carry all 18 lbs of him back to the house, missing a SNAP fundraiser...if I had stopped for a leash, he would have been much further away!He is only 9 years old chronologically.

Kirby needs a home

This beautiful cocker was adopted about 6 years ago and his owner died this year. No one in the family was able to take him so he was returned to the shelter and adopted
the next day! Sadly he was returned for aggression 3 1/2 months later, then went after a shelter manager so was not going to be put back up for adoption. His first foster person would not take him back either.
He has been staying at my house while I have been looking for a home for him and I can
say that he is NOT at all aggressive if the person is watching his behavior. He was
aggressive with me at the vet clinic because I was STUPID and approached him too fast
as a stranger. If he is allowed to come out of his crate instead of a hand going in after him, he is a perfect gentleman.In his second home, he was allowed on the bed
which can add to dominance issues. I have had Kirby since August 2nd and have not
had any behavior problems AT ALL.
He is quiet, well behaved and does not act like a 9 year old dog at all. His eyes are clear and he can tire me out on a walk! He loves to go in the truck and is well mannered with other dogs. He likes shopping at Petsmart. Kirby is crate trained and eats dry food only. His coat
is rather short. He is fine with cats also. I would put him with older children who understand not to get right in his face, as with any dog.
Please consider Kirby as I can not add him to my gang . My job is fostering, not permanent home status. He has done nothing wrong to deserve this house shuffle.

Weezy Baby the Ball Python gets a new habitat at Pet Stuff Resale

Weezy Baby found his new habitat thru Craigslist, but not on Craigslist! He got lucky and so did his mom Michelle because I peruse CL daily looking for neat things for current PSR clients.
Sometimes I find clients there also:) As a student, Michelle didn't have a big budget and I had
a 40 gal tank with a lid that was cracked so was very reasonably priced. Ta Da, Weezy Baby now
has a much bigger tank than he expected to get. He is very friendly, likes to watch TV while napping on Michelle's shoulder and about 2 feet long.(Ball pythons are traditionally very placid.)
Michelle was also very patient during my "pets are lifetime commitments" speech!

From time to time I hear a prospective client say "Oh I can get this cheaper at _____". The response is "maybe, maybe not"; in many cases, it is CHEAPER and the client sacrifices quality, especially if the crate is for a puppy. They have sharp teeth and endless energy!

Often it is an apples to oranges comparison. When I know the specific brand, usually a bargain brand, I can point out the differences. On wire crates, there may or may not be "guards", little fasteners going forward and/or backwards anchoring the top to the sides. These prevent the dog from pulling or pushing the wire walls ajar, which can injure the dog. The less expensive crates have fewer of these.
The strength of the wire itself varies also. The bargain brands have what I call "winky" wire, not very strong. The generic brand I sell is mid range gauge.
The really strong stuff is found in crates such as Midwest Ultima brand-pit strong
I call them.

In addition, the plastic trays are often very thin, so can split under the weight of a bigger dog.
One of the most common requests I get at Pet Stuff Resale is for replacement trays.

Petmate, which has made some very good crates, has really lowered their standards
on some smaller plastic crates. The plastic itself is flimsy and the plastic connectors fall off frequently, especially the front ones. They have improved the door; I no longer see the round dial latch which was terrible. Unfortunately, these crates are not bargain priced.

I spend a lot of time educating customers and will refer clients to a pet store
if I do not have what is best for them. It's not just good business, I don't
dare ignore how my momma raised me!

I gave incorrect information about recycling cat furniture in last post

I want to correct it but getting different information from different vets.
I have been told that you do not need to wait 90 days and also told you cannot
reuse cat furniture because spores such as ringworm last forever. In the spirit of honesty I did not want to wait to say I need to do more research on this topic.
I do apologize and thank Cindy Shaw for the gentle to update my information.
I am waiting to hear back from several more vets.

Cleaning cat trees at 4 am?

Yes, I was just outside in my driveway doing exactly that! I was excited about it; a load of cat trees when it is rare to get even one in the secondary market. Ok, I wasn't quite that excited to be out there but was wide awake and wanted to put my time to good use. I grabbed Kirby the cocker to give him some out time and multitask also, I confess. Too bad none of my neighbors were up to get a photo!

Between the truck dome light and a subdivision street light I could get quite a bit done. It's a tiny community with lots of pine trees and a couple of small lakes, so the breezes are quite nice,great working environment. (This is just another of the many benefits of working for ones self.)

This 5 and 6 foot cat trees are in great shape and are in neutral colors. The support piece of wood(the trunk) is all one piece, not two pieces nailed together, which is important for stability. It also speaks to the quality of workmanship, no cutting corners on this cat furniture. They are priced between 100.00 and 125.00.

One of the most important aspects of Pet Stuff Resale is product cleanliness, so these trees need to be isolated for 90 days, until 12/9/09, as a precaution. There is no way to disinfect all the way thru the carpet, nor is leaving them outside adequate. FIP is the longest lasting germie affecting cats; even though it is not common, I don't take any chances.

Lucky Lilly gets a new home and a new crate!

They picked out a crate that was just her size and she went into it easily to show her new family how much room she had. Then she was ready to get out and smile some more!

with a representative (and so happy to be speaking to a live person who was not in India).
She was having difficulty accessing my account and made some reference to my password, which big surprise, is one of my dogs name! That triggered the very nice rep, named Rebekkah, to

Almost a yard of dachshund!

Mikey is 34" nose to tail and was loaded with heartworms when he arrived at a Houston area shelter, but not anymore. He stayed at the shelter seemingly for ages as no one had room to foster. Dachshund rescue who is very good about taking some of the many dachshunds needing
medical attention was full as well.

My dear friend who got me onto dachshunds (and I paid her back by getting her into greyhound
adoptions:) kindly offered to take him in during heartworm treatment, even though it's a 2 month or more commitment.

Mikey did try a few tricks at first such as "I will push the tray out of my kennel" and "I will
get out of the kennel" but soon settled in and did well during the treatment.

Last week he announced that he was staying there permanently as it was too much trouble to
train in a new person(he is a little bossy, in a polite way). Yea for both Mikey and Greta Jean!

Here's another plea for giving heartworm prevention, It is so much cheaper than treating for heartworm disease and of course the treatment is extremely painful for the dog. It also reduces the number of animals a shelter or rescue can save, both in money and space considerations.

Plastic exercise pen very popular at Pet Stuff Resale

Sisters Pandy and Mandy are showing how to use a plastic exercise pen to its best use; to lean on so they can see out more! 30" tall and approximately 15 linear feet, it provides ample play area for puppies. The configuration of the plastic discourages climbing puppy feet(Chihuahuas and Poms are notorious climbers) and can be reconfigured easily. It folds up for easy storage.

Many people prefer these to the wire xpens as they do not rust, so can be left outside when needed. This just came into Pet Stuff Resale and is 50.00 plus tax.

Pandy and Mandy have been in my foster care for a year, since they were 6 weeks old. Their mom was a blue heeler and one of the dads was a chihuahua, which shows alot in one of the male

littermates, TugBoat. No one knows the rest of the male lineage! They are both under 15 lbs

and at full growth.

Wish them luck on an adoption interview tomorrow! Many people have inquired about them,

but I have wanted to keep them together as they are very bonded.

Major kudos to their humom for her patience in taking these terrific photos; she admitted salting the "tree" a little with catnip:). There were 12 great shots, I had a very difficult time cutting down to just these 4! Winston the black male is intimidated by absolutely nothing, he looks to be training baby girl Nell to be as feisty.

I recommend that all carpeted cat items be isolated for 90 days as they cannot be
totally cleaned all the way down to the base. Leaving out in the sun doesn't do it
either. I date everything when I get it in if I do not have its history as part of my "everything is sanitized" policy. This was 40.00 at Pet Stuff Resale.

Paco, the red chihuahua in the lower corner of one picture is a rescued baby as are

This precious baby was a stray and luckily someone took her to a Houston shelter.More luckily for her, a nice lady named Paige and her daughter Maddie adopted her. A two year old fluffy maltese/shih tzu mix, her full name is Cleopatra, Queen of Denial!

Cleo is shown here in her new crate from Pet Stuff Resale where she is very happy for sleepy time. Otherwise she thinks her familys life mission is to keep her tummy rubbed!

With my rescue background I am also pleased when a dog is adopted from a shelter. Thanks to this family for that and for their crate shopping choice.
